Journey to La Palma by plane...
|
La Palma, the westernmost of the Canary Islands, has an international airport. All of the bigger charter carriers go directly to Santa Cruz de la Palma (SPC) several times a week, in the summer there are also the Spanish low-cost carriers from Barcelona and Madrid. The airport is located on the east coast of the island within the municipality of Villa de Mazo, about 8 km south of the capital Santa Cruz.
Teneriffa-South/"Reina Sofia" is the biggest airport of the Canaries, airplanes from all over Europe and Central America are landing at two minutes intervals. According to this there is a chance of booking a flight to Tenerife-South on good terms.
A taxi takes you from the airport to the ferries in Los Cristianos (15 km, about 20 Euros). The ferries are leaving daily to La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. You should book a flight that will arrive before 5 p.m., so that you would not miss the ferry at 7.30 p.m. The return flight should not leave before 10 a.m., as the ferry of Fred.Olsen casts off at 6 a.m. and arrives in Los Cristianos about 8 a.m.
The ones who booked a particularly favourable flight to Tenerife often realize too later that the plane they are sitting in is heading towards Tenerife-Nord/"Los Rodeos". But that's not the end of the world. The Canarian airline "Binter Canarias", awarded the "best airline of the year" two years in a row by an international jury, starts from TFN to Santa Cruz de la Palma up to 24 times a day. The duration of the flight is about 30 minutes and includes spectacular views of Tenerife's famous vulcano "Pico del Teide" (3814 m).

For centuries Santa Cruz de la Palma was famous for its shipbuilders, who were said to be the best of the world - amongst others the "Amistad" was built here, one of the last Spanish slave ships.

There's no more shipbuilding today, life is laid-back in the harbour: The Canarian car and foot passenger ferrries of Fred.Olsen and Naviera Armas are landing daily, the public ferry company Acciona (formerly Trasmediterranea) is taking import goods to the island, and a small marina is welcoming sailors from time to time, that have a break on their route to the Caribean.

In 2006 Acciona/Trasmediterránea stopped passenger transportation to La Palma, causing popular outrage. Travelling by car from Cádiz is possible via Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The passage is quite pricy and takes you more than 24 hours.
The Norwegian-Canarian shipping company Fred.Olsen is running the passage Los Cristianos/Tenerife - Santa Cruz de la Palma almost daily. With the modern "Benchijigua Exprés" it takes you two and a half hours, travelling with the trimaran can be quite bumpy. A single ticket is about 50 Euros.

Travelling with the "Volcan de Taburiente" of Naviera Armas is less pricy: 30 Euros from Los Cristianos to Santa Cruz de la Palma, duration about three and a half hours. A while ago the Naviera Armas developed the most complicated timetable ever of the Western Hemisphere. So the ferry is on business continuously and you have the choice to continue your journey to Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, El Hierro or La Gomera.
